Gaia is the daughter of the Norse God Tyr and an unnamed Maori Goddess, thus being a Goddess of mixed heritage, and having the possibility to join either pantheon when she turns 21. Not only that, but she is also the one mentioned in both, Norse and Maori prophecies as the goddess who will become the wife the ruling god, and thus enabling the rest of the chosen pantheon to obtain their full powers. Because of this prophecy, when she was a newborn, the giant Bryn was sent to kill her. Instead, he killed her parents and adopted her as his child and lived with her in the island Waiheke. Most of her life, she lived secluded in this island, under her adoptive father's smothering care, until she finally convinced him to allow her to come to Auckland to study nursing. Among the cares Bryn took to protect Gaia was to slightly change her age, so that the giants and dwarves seeking to kill her would think she was just a normal human. For many years, Gaia was unaware that her adoptive father had killed her true parents, as the giant considered them unfit for parenting. Unfortunately, when she found out about this, Gaia was unwilling to forgive him, and wished to never see him again.

At first glance, Gaia is your normal girl-next-door type in her early 20s. As the only female living in a flatmate for three people, she's usually the one keeping things in order and running smoothly, but without letting the boys take advantage of this fact. If it's the boys' turn to clean the toilets, Gaia will see it done! She is quite responsible, in the sense that she takes her job very seriously, and does her best to be good at it. She has also proven to be not only a reliable flatmate to Axl Johnson and Zeb, but also a true friend, especially to Axl, whom she has a (secret at first) crush on. And, of course, like most people her age, she likes to dance and party. Without forgetting a drink, of course!
Having lived in Waiheke with an overprotective father all of her life, Gaia is determined to be free and explore the world around her. She got only as far as Auckland, but being able to make her own decisions is something truly precious to her. Having her life planned out by other people, whether it is her father, her flatmates or the gods, is something she doesn't cope well with. All Gaia wants, is to be able to make her own destiny, and able to choose who to spend the rest of her life with, not have destiny throw a significant other at her, even if that someone is the man she truly loves. Though she usually opts for bargaining, she has been known to turn towards a rebellious attitude as a last resort, in particular when her father, her boyfriend Jacob or her flatmates wish to keep her protected. Several times, Gaia has caused quite a bit of trouble for those who care for her by running away.
Generally, Gaia is a very caring young woman towards the people who are important in her life. She is very fond of her father, the only family she has ever known. Though he may sometimes be too harsh on her, she still wishes for him to be happy, even if it means she has to leave behind her job, her friends, and the life she has made for herself in Auckland. Also, her flatmates are very important to her, even Zeb, who can be an idiot most of the time. During a time when Zeb was taken as a hostage by someone wishing to kill her, she was willing to put her own life at risk to save her friend.
One of her strongest motivations in life is her love for her flatmate Axl. From the moment we meet her, it is noticeable she is strongly attracted to him. But being the levelheaded woman she is, she doesn't act on this feelings, for fear of losing his friendship, though there have been times when her love for him is partially revealed, only to be cloaked back in the last minute to protect herself. She may have other boyfriends or even sleep with random men, but in the end, Axl is the one she cares about the most, and she would do anything in her power to avoid hurting him, even if it means trying to fight against the destiny of her inner goddess. Unfortunately for Axl, Gaia is quite popular with men, and being single, she doesn't hesitate about dating or sleeping with someone else, until the moment in which she accepts and confesses her love for Axl.
Something important about her is that as her ascension to goddess approaches, it also brings forth some changes in her personality. Most of the time she looks confused and out of it, drinking heavily and looking for casual sex partners. She even quit her nursing job, to which she had only briefly returned. She experiences strange dreams, and sometimes says things that point to her connection to the goddess Frigg, matron of marriage, and it's likely she doubts that it's even her who is saying it. She certainly never asked to become a deity, and she clearly isn't looking forward to it. Gaia doesn't care for obtaining godly powers or becoming involved in their affairs, not if it means destiny interfering with her free will.
Due to the untimely death of the human vessel carrying the spirit of Idun, Gaia becomes possessed by it during her 21st birthday goddess ceremony, instead of obtaining the essence of Frigg or the Maori Papatuanuku, like everyone expected. This is an important turn of events, because, in the first place, it disrupts the prophecy made by the Giants and Dwarves, as well as the one from the Maori gods. Gaia does not fulfill her destiny to become the consort of either Odin or Maui, instead she houses the spirit of Idun, the Constant Goddess, who must exist for the rest of the gods to live. Not only this, but though Gaia loves Axl, Idun's true love is Bragi, who just happens to be Axl's second-oldest brother, Anders.
Now before this, Gaia never showed any interest in Anders, and in fact, found him even repulsive, as the older Johnson is known for being a womanizer. Being a strong, young woman in love, she resolves to fight her destiny as Idun to be with Axl, both of them being blind of the consequences the goddess spirit will have for Gaia. While the human girl is truly and deeply in love with Axl, the goddess craves her godly husband's spirit. The Oracles of the Gods and Goddesses warn both lovers that this is a force they cannot fight, as destiny cannot be changed. Sadly and reluctantly, Gaia accepts her nature as Idun, allowing her to search for Bragi, and ends up sleeping with Anders/Bragi, not without feeling resignation and guilt for the pain this will cause to the man she loves.
As it turns out, Gaia still despises Anders and can't truly see herself forming a relationship with him, and very directly tells him so. Gaia truly tries to be levelheaded, by avoiding to answer the provocative sexts he sends her, and demanding they meet in a public place when he tells her they need to talk. But even though we see her doing her best not to see him again, and not to give in to Idun's wishes, in the end her resolve fails and she sleeps with him again. Deep inside her soul, Gaia knows that as long as she and Anders/Bragi are near, they will continue to seek each other, the gods will find a way to be together, no matter how much their human sides fight against it, or how much they hate each other. She is conscious that this 'thing', as she calls it, will destroy her, Anders and Axl. Though initially she lies to him, thinking it was a one-time only thing, Gaia is forced to tell Axl the truth when she realizes the force driving her to Bragi is much bigger than her. Because she does not wish to cause the brothers to drift even further apart, Gaia realizes she needs to be out of the picture, in the spur of the moment decides that she needs to leave New Zealand, and to do it alone, with the hopes that someday she will come to be at peace with her inner goddess.
